When making a child custody order, Missouri courts are guided by what is in the best interests of the child. The parents may submit an agreed upon custody arrangement to the court, and it will likely be adopted if it is in the child’s best interests. However, if the parents cannot agree, the court will look at several factors such as the wishes of the parents, the child’s relationship with parents, siblings, and other significant friends or family members, which parent will encourage the child’s relationship with the other parent, a parent’s intention to relocate the principle residence of the child and how the child is adjusting to home, school, and community. The Court’s goal is to provide the child with active involvement by both parents, so the parents’ age, sex, or financial status are not relevant factors.
